Balochistan's Counter-Terrorism Department killed 10 militants in a gun battle in Barkhan district on October 10, in one of the larger single engagements reported in the province's ongoing counter-insurgency campaign this month.
What happened in Rara Sham
The CTD moved on the Rara Sham area of Barkhan acting on specific intelligence, according to Balochistan's Home Department. A statement from Babar Yousafzai, an aide in that department, described an "intense gun battle" in which 10 armed militants were killed; two CTD personnel were injured in the exchange. The militants' bodies were taken to Rara Sham district hospital. Officials said the operation also recovered a large quantity of arms, ammunition and explosives from the site, which they characterised as evidence of a planned attack the raid had pre-empted.
The operation falls under Operation Radd-ul-Fitna 3, the current phase of Balochistan's provincial counter-terrorism campaign. Officials identified the militants as members of Fitna al-Hindustan — the designation Pakistan's federal government formally gave last year to a cluster of Balochistan-based militant groups it accuses India of backing as part of a proxy campaign in the province. That attribution remains contested, and nothing in the reporting on this specific operation independently verifies a foreign-backing claim; it reflects the government's standing position rather than evidence particular to this raid.
Official reaction
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi praised the Balochistan CTD's "professional capabilities" and said the operation had "thwarted the nefarious designs" of Fitna al-Hindustan militants through timely action. He also wished the two injured personnel a speedy recovery. Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti separately called the operation commendable and said security operations against terrorism in the province would continue, framing the security forces as central to removing militancy from Balochistan.
Part of a wider pattern
The Barkhan raid is not an isolated incident. On October 7, security forces killed five militants in a separate operation against Fitna al-Hindustan fighters in the Siyapast and Killi Gashtari areas of Mastung district. Build Better Pakistan has tracked a steady run of similar operations across the province through September and October, including operations in Mashkel and South Waziristan and in Sherani and Kachhi. Independent data on the broader trend lines up with that pattern: a Q3 2026 report from the Centre for Research and Security Studies recorded an 83 percent surge in violence-linked fatalities nationwide, with Balochistan and KP accounting for the large majority of that increase.
Why the pace of operations hasn't slowed the trend
What distinguishes Barkhan from a routine skirmish is the scale — a 10-militant toll in a single raid is on the higher end even for a province that reports CTD and security-force operations on a near-weekly basis this year. That raises the same question that recurs across BBP's security coverage: operations of this frequency and intensity are degrading individual militant cells, but the province-wide fatality count has kept climbing rather than falling, suggesting replacement and recruitment are outpacing attrition rather than the reverse.
