PTI Says Afridi and Junaid Akbar Were Arrested Hours After Governor's Rule Hit KP

Hours after President Zardari imposed governor's rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, PTI said security agencies took ousted chief minister Sohail Afridi and provincial party president Junaid Akbar into custody. Authorities had not confirmed or denied it as of this writing.

Sohail Afridi had barely stopped being Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's chief minister when PTI said he was in custody. Hours after President Asif Ali Zardari signed a proclamation on October 11 imposing emergency and governor's rule on the province, removing Afridi and his entire provincial cabinet from office, the party said security agencies had detained him along with KP's provincial PTI president, Junaid Akbar.

What's been claimed, and by whom

The claim first surfaced on Junaid Akbar's own official X account, which said both men had been taken into custody. PTI parliamentary leader Shahid Khattak then told reporters that police and security agencies had picked up Afridi, Akbar and other senior party figures. Separately, one report cited provincial information minister Shafi Jan as also saying Afridi had been detained, while another described the government as having moved to restrict Afridi's movements, without giving clear detail on what that restriction covers.

None of this has been independently verified. As of this writing, federal and provincial authorities had neither confirmed nor denied that either man was in custody, and no government official had been quoted on the record addressing the claim directly. Pakistani outlets reporting the story — including Aaj News, Samaa and 24NewsHD — have attributed it to PTI statements and the Akbar social media post rather than to any security agency or government spokesperson.

Why the timing matters

The claims landed on the same day Zardari's proclamation stripped Afridi and his cabinet of office under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution, and the same day PTI supporters had been converging on the Swabi interchange as part of the party's long march toward Islamabad. Tarar told an Islamabad press conference that Governor Kundi would now run the province with an advisory council for an initial period of six months — a detail that had not been reported when governor's rule was first announced.

Afridi had spent the preceding days warning he would respond to governor's rule with what he called an "unprecedented" reaction, and PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan called the move a "grave political mistake," vowing to challenge it through "constitutional, legal and democratic forums." If the arrest claims hold up, they would answer part of the open question BBP flagged when governor's rule was first imposed: whether Afridi's defiance would take the form of a legal challenge, a renewed street mobilisation, or something the government moved to pre-empt directly by detaining him.

What happens to the long march now

PTI's long march had been built around momentum toward Swabi and, eventually, Islamabad, with Afridi himself calling on supporters to converge there by road, motorcycle or on foot. A chief minister stripped of office and reportedly in custody removes the figure the march was organised around from the field entirely, at least for now. Mobile network and data services were reportedly throttled in parts of Peshawar as the emergency took effect, and heavy container barricades were placed along routes into the city — measures consistent with past moments of political tension in the province, as Build Better Pakistan has covered in earlier PTI mobilisations.

What to watch next

Three things will clarify this quickly: whether the federal government or Inter-Services Public Relations issues an on-record statement confirming or denying the detentions, whether Afridi or Akbar appear in any official capacity (a court appearance, a formal charge, or a public statement from custody), and whether PTI's legal team files anything in court citing the arrests specifically rather than governor's rule alone. Build Better Pakistan will update this story as those details are confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has the government confirmed Afridi and Junaid Akbar were arrested?
No. As of this writing, federal and provincial authorities had neither confirmed nor denied the arrests. The claim originated from a post on Junaid Akbar's own official X account and was repeated by PTI parliamentary leader Shahid Khattak, who said police and security agencies had taken both men, along with other senior PTI figures, into custody.
How does this relate to governor's rule in KP?
The arrest claims surfaced within hours of President Asif Ali Zardari signing a proclamation imposing emergency and governor's rule on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under Articles 232 and 234, which removed Afridi and his cabinet from office with immediate effect. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the arrangement, under which Governor Faisal Karim Kundi now runs the province with an advisory council, is intended to last six months initially.

Sources tell Pakistani outlets the federal government has completed administrative groundwork — DC and secretary appointments, police posting lists — for a possible emergency covering KP's eight merged tribal districts plus Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Bannu and Lakki Marwat.
